Problem
When configuring two-factor authentication (2FA) for Microsoft 365 Admin, the option to use a non-Microsoft authenticator app might not appear:
Solution
This issue typically arises from one of two causes:
-
Organizational policy restrictions:
- Visit the Microsoft Entra admin center.
- Navigate to Protection → Authentication Methods → Policies.
- Locate Third-party software OATH tokens.
- Adjust the policy:
- Set Enable to No (disables associated restrictions).
- Or, edit the policy to explicitly allow the Subble user.
- Click Save.
-
Legacy MFA policy not configured:
- Go to Protection → Multifactor authentication → Getting started → Configure → Additional cloud-based multifactor authentication settings.
- Ensure the checkbox for Verification code from mobile app or hardware token is selected.
Once resolved, the option "I want to use a different authenticator app" will appear.
